About This Open Mat Directory
bjjopenmats.ch is a hand-maintained directory of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu open mats in Zürich and the surrounding area, including Wallisellen, Winterthur, and Pfäffikon SZ. Whether you train in the city, are visiting Zürich for work or holidays, or just want extra rolls on the weekend, the goal is the same: help you find a mat to step on without digging through a dozen gym websites and Instagram accounts.
Use the filters above to narrow the schedule by school, city, or weekday — sessions happening today are highlighted and sorted to the top. Each card shows the address, time, and any conditions the gym publishes, such as whether the open mat is free, open to visitors, or reserved for members, along with links to the gym's website, Instagram, and Google Maps.
A quick word on etiquette: arrive on time, introduce yourself, keep your gear clean, and match your partner's intensity. Open mats live from gyms generously opening their doors — treat the space like your own academy. If you run a gym around Zürich and host an open mat that is missing here, get in touch and we will add it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a BJJ open mat?
An open mat is an unstructured training session at a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym. There is no formal class or instruction — grapplers show up, find a partner, and roll (spar) or drill at their own pace. Open mats are where people from different gyms meet, exchange techniques, and get extra rounds in outside their regular classes.
Are open mats free, or do I need to be a member?
It varies by gym. Some open mats in Zürich are free and explicitly open to everyone, others are reserved for members, and a few charge a small mat fee for visitors. Check the notes on each listing — where a session is marked "members only" or "free, open to everyone", that comes straight from the gym's own schedule.
Gi or no-gi?
Both formats exist. Some gyms run dedicated gi or no-gi open mats, while many leave it open — people roll in whatever they bring, and it is common to see gi and no-gi pairs sharing the same mat. If a listing does not specify, bring both or ask the gym beforehand.
Can beginners and visiting grapplers join?
Generally yes — open mats are one of the friendliest ways to experience a new gym, and visiting grapplers passing through Zürich are usually welcome. As a beginner it helps to have a few classes of experience first so you know basic safety rules. White belts are a normal sight at most open mats.
Should I contact the gym before showing up?
We recommend it, especially for your first visit. Schedules change around holidays, competitions, and summer breaks, and some gyms ask visitors to register in advance. A quick message on Instagram or through the gym's website saves you a wasted trip.
How do I add, correct, or remove a listing?
Email hartungcarlo@gmail.com or send a DM to @grapplingsaitama on Instagram. Corrections from gym owners and regular visitors are what keep this directory accurate, so messages are always appreciated.
How is this data verified and how current is it?
Every listing is checked against the gym's own website, published schedule, or Instagram account before it goes live, and the whole directory is re-verified periodically. The "Data last updated" date in the footer shows when the listings were last refreshed. Still, always confirm times with the gym — schedules can change on short notice.
